The students have taken a small break from reviewing numbers 0-20 so that we can celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 16th through October 16th. The students have been learning about the Vejigante character that appears during Carnival in Hatillo, Ponce, and Loíza, Puerto Rico. The vejigante is known for wearing brightly colored clothing and masks, traditionally made from coconut shells, with horns and teeth. The students designed and created their own vejigante masks out of construction paper. Below is a slideshow of the process and the finished masks which are on display in the hallway outside of the new Spanish room.
